Kim Olson
Colonel, USAF, retired

Protect our most precious resources: land, water, and people; one grain, drop, and Texan at a time.

Kim Olson, farmer, veteran, pilot and champion of education, is dedicated to influencing the future of sustainable food production, improving markets for Texas produce, and encouraging rural and urban development that improves access to healthy food. Kim is the 2018 Democratic nominee for Texas Commissioner of Agriculture.

Committed to Eco-Agriculture

In working with veterans, nutritious food became the great healer for those struggling with the human heartbreak that is war. Kim has a Natural-Organic Certification from the Texas Organic Research Center and is a Texas Master Gardener, who provides naturally grown and "beyond organics" food, raises bees, and is committed to sustainable Eco-Agriculture. She grows produce for Texas families, provides training on growing healthy food, and lectures on small scale farming on her 4K River Ranch in Mineral Wells, Texas.

Serves Texas Veterans

As the retired CEO/President of Grace After Fire, a Texas-based nonprofit dedicated to helping women veterans help themselves, she reshaped how care was delivered to thousands of women veterans. Kim exemplifies those military veterans who continue to serve their communities and their nation and was inducted into the 2014 "Texas Women's Hall of Fame."

Dedicated 28 Years in US Military

Her 25-years in uniform encompassed a time of great change for the Air Force. She was part of the first generation of female military pilots, eventually accumulating nearly 4,000 hours of flying time. As one of the first women to command an operational flying squadron, Kim rose to the rank of Colonel, served in the Pentagon and deployed to several combat zones, including Iraq and retired in 2005.

By 2010, Kim was back in military service, this time serving in the Texas State Guard as Director of IT and personnel systems at their Austin headquarters. Her expertise prepared and trained the 2,300 volunteer military forces who augment state and local authorities during natural and manmade disasters.

Champion for Public Education

She entered the field of public education. By 2007 she was the Director of Human Resources for Dallas Independent School District, the second largest in Texas. In that same year, she was elected to the Weatherford Independent School District Board of Trustees and in 2009 they were recognized as the "Texas Outstanding Board of the Year."

Author and Professional Speaker

Iraq and Back, Inside the War to Win the Peace. Her book provides an insight into the early days of the Iraq war. "Colonel Olson is a modern day Joan of Arc, born to inspire, to lead, and to command.
